1. The Acropolis and the Parthenon

Crowned by the majestic Parthenon, the Acropolis is a must-see for anyone visiting Athens. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most iconic ancient landmarks in the world. How to get there from AMA: By tram and metro:

Walk to the Alimos tram stop (just a few minutes from the apartment). Take the T5 tram line to Syntagma Square.

Once there, transfer to the Red Line 2 of the Metro (Anthoupoli – Elliniko) and get off at the Acropolis station.

The journey takes approximately 40-50 minutes. By taxi or car: You can also take a taxi or drive directly to the Acropolis. The journey is approximately 15-20 minutes, depending on traffic.

Once you arrive at Acropolis Station, you will have a short stroll through the picturesque streets of Plaka before starting your climb up the Acropolis Hill.

2. Ancient Agora of Athens

The Ancient Agora, the heart of political and social life in ancient Athens, is located just below the Acropolis. Here you will find ruins of temples, arcades and markets. How to get there from the Acropolis: After exploring the Acropolis, walk to the Ancient Agora. It is about a 10-minute walk along the pedestrian streets of Plaka and Monastiraki.

3. Temple of Olympian Zeus

This colossal temple is one of the largest in Greece and is dedicated to Zeus, the king of the gods.

How to get there from AMA:

If you are visiting the Acropolis first, the Temple of Olympian Zeus is a 5-minute walk from the Acropolis Museum.

From the apartment, follow the same tram and metro route as mentioned for the Acropolis. You can get off at Syntagma or Acropolis stations and then walk to the temple.

4. Panathenaic Stadium

The Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896, is made entirely of marble and is a magnificent tribute to the sporting history of Greece. How to get there from AMA: From the apartment, follow the same route to Syntagma via tram. The stadium is a 15-minute walk from Syntagma Square. You can also get off at Evangelismos metro station (one stop after Syntagma on Line 3) and walk for about 10 minutes to reach the stadium  

5. Monastiraki and Plaka

Monastiraki is known for its lively open-air market and authentic Greek taverns. It is a great place to shop and grab a bite to eat after visiting the Acropolis.

Plaka, the “neighborhood of the gods”, is a charming, historic district full of neoclassical buildings, narrow streets and shops.

How to get there from AMA:

Monastiraki is accessible via Metro Line 1 (Piraeus-Kifissia). From Alimos Marina, take the tram to Syntagma and transfer to Line 1 at Monastiraki station.

Alternatively, after visiting the Acropolis, Monastiraki and Plaka are within walking distance.

Travel tips:

Tickets: You can buy a combined ticket for the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, and several other archaeological sites, saving you money and allowing you to visit at your own pace. Wear comfortable shoes: Many of these sites require some walking, especially on the Acropolis, where the path is steep and uneven. Start early: To avoid crowds, try to start your day early, especially during peak tourist season.
